2025年 卒園式でのご挨拶 - 田中茂範 名誉園長

みなさん、ご卒園、おめでとうございます。心よりお喜びを申し上げます。
卒園証書の授与式、みなさん、ステキな笑顔で、誇らしげで、立派でしたよ。

さて、これまで当たり前だったミライでの生活から、新しい生活にシフトです。
たくさんの思い出をポケットに入れて、新しい生活にテイクオフする日がきました。
テイクオフしたら、前に進んで、どんどん羽ばたいていくだけです。するときっとすばらしい未来が開けていきます。
みなさんが未来に向けて自信をもってテイクオフすることのお手伝いをすること、これが「ミライ」という名前を付けたこの幼児園のミッションのひとつです。
そして今、そのミッションを完了しようとしています。

卒園式に際して、今日少しだけお話したいことがあります。それは「考える力」についてです。

これから何が大切かと聞かれれば、ぼくは、「考える力」であると即座に答えます。
ぼくが20代前半だった1975年にアメリカに留学しました。
そこで、ある本に出合いました。「The Coming of Post-Industrial Society（脱工業化社会の到来）」というタイトルでした。ハーバード大学の教授ダニエル・ベルの著作です。
情報革命により、知識社会、情報社会が到来することを予言した本です。
当時、ぼくは「情報化社会が到来する」という思いで感動しました。

そして、私たちは、今まさに情報化社会の真っただ中にいます。
情報化社会といえば、心地よい響きのコトバですが、一方で、多くの情報は意図をもって流されています。鵜呑みにできません。生成AIにより情報の入手がより簡単になりました。
しかし、バイアスがあったり、ハルシネーションと呼ばれるように、多くの間違った情報が含まれいたりすること忘れてはなりません。

そこで、自分で考え、判断し、そして行動する力が必要になるのです。
何であるか、何ができるか、何をすべきかを考える力です。

このことを反映してか、今、教育界では、「探究」が最大のキーワードになっています。
探究とは、まさに、物事の本質を見極めるためしっかり考えるということです。

これまで、学びは教科書の中にあり、正解も教科書にありました。そして、教科書の知識を覚え、高得点を取る人が優秀な生徒とみなされてきました。
しかし、探究に正解はありません。自分で課題をみつけ、それに取り組み、自分で課題解決の道をみつけなければならないのです。

今、全国の学校で多くの先生、そして多くの生徒が戸惑っています。
生徒は、探究って何かよくわからない、と言い、先生は、探究をどう指導してよいかわからないと言います。

実は、「探究を指導する」という発想に問題があるのです。
探究で大切なのは教えるのではなく、生徒一人一人が自分で学ぶ、自分の答えを見つけることを見守ることなのです。緩やかにガイドしながら、見守るということです。

皆さんがこの幼児園でやってきたことを振り返ってみてください。
モンテソーリ教育では、まさに、探究こそ、学びの本丸であると位置づけています。
自分でやりたいことを見つけ、それに集中し、そして、納得するまで、やり続ける。
先生は、子どものやっていることの邪魔はしないが、しっかり見守る。これは、モンテソーリ教育のエッセンスです。
世の中の教育がやっとモンテソーリに追いつこうとしているのです。

もう一度いいます。この幼児園でみなさん一人ひとりが取り組んできたことは、探究そのものなのです。
みなさんは、無意識のうちに、「探究の精神」と「やり方」を身につけています。探究の素地は確実に作られています。

小学校に入学しても、それからこれからの長い人生において、自信をもって、自分の探究心、探究力をどんどん伸ばしていってください。そして、考える力を磨いてください。

ぼくからお伝えしたいのは以上ですが、これからも健やかで、すばらしい日々を送っていかれることを祈願して、ぼくの挨拶にしたいと思います。

International Montessori Mirai Kindergarten

The year 2025 Graduation Ceremony 

Congratulations, everyone!

I’d like to express my heartfelt congratulations to you all on your graduation. You looked so happy and proud as you received your graduation certificates. You have done so well.

Now, it’s time to move on from your familiar life at Mirai to a new chapter. Today, you take off on a new journey, carrying with you many beautiful memories from Mirai in your pocket.

Once you take off, you will continue to spread your wings and soar forward. And as you do, a wonderful future will surely open up before you.

One of the missions of this kindergarten is to help each of you take off with confidence toward the future—this is why we chose the name Mirai, meaning "future." And now, that mission is about to be fulfilled.

Today, at this graduation ceremony, I would like to share a few words about the power of thought—the ability to think.

If someone were to ask me what is most important for the future, I would immediately say: the ability to think.

When I was in my early 20s, back in 1975, I had the opportunity to study in the United States. There, I came across a book that left a deep impression on me—The Coming of Post-Industrial Society, written by Harvard professor Daniel Bell.

This book predicted the arrival of a knowledge-based, information-driven society brought about by the information revolution. At the time, I was truly fascinated by the idea that an information society was on the horizon.

And now, we find ourselves in the very midst of that society.

The term information society has a pleasant ring to it, but we must remember that much of the information around us is intentionally shaped and influenced. We cannot simply accept everything at face value.

With the rise of generative AI, accessing information has become easier than ever. However, we must not forget that this information often carries biases and, as seen in what is known as "hallucination," can contain numerous inaccuracies.

This is why it is essential to think for ourselves, make our own judgments, and take action. We must ask:　 What is this? What can I do? What should I do?

The power of critical thinking will be crucial for navigating the future.

Perhaps reflecting this shift, exploration has become one of the most important concepts in education today. At its core, exploration is about the pursuit of understanding—the ability to think deeply and discern the true essence of things.

In the past, learning was confined to textbooks, and the correct answers were always found within them. Students who memorized textbook knowledge and achieved high scores were considered excellent.

However, in exploration, there are no predetermined answers. Students must identify their own questions, engage with them, and discover their own solutions.

Many teachers and students across the country are struggling with this shift. Students say they don’t fully understand what exploration means, while teachers are unsure how to guide it.

The real issue lies in the idea of teaching exploration. Exploration is not something that can simply be taught—it must be experienced.

The key is to create an environment where each student pursues understanding independently and finds their own answers. The role of educators is to gently guide and observe rather than directly instruct.

Take a moment to reflect on what you have experienced at this kindergarten.

In Montessori education, exploration is at the very core of learning. Each child discovers what they want to do, immerses themselves in it, and continues until they feel truly satisfied.

Teachers do not interfere with what children are doing, but they carefully observe and support them. This is the essence of Montessori education.

In many ways, the rest of the education world is only now beginning to catch up with what Montessori has long embraced.

Let me say this again: what each of you has been engaged in at this kindergarten is exploration itself.

Without even realizing it, you have already developed both the spirit of exploration and the ability to pursue it. The foundation for lifelong inquiry has been firmly established within you.

As you enter elementary school and embark on the long journey of life ahead, I encourage you to have confidence in yourselves and continue nurturing your curiosity and exploratory spirit.

Keep developing your ability to think deeply and critically.

That is all I wanted to share with you today.

I sincerely wish you a future filled with health, happiness, and wonderful experiences.
